Book Review: Hard Day's Knight

Lots of Vampires. No Sparkles. Serious Snark.
Children are missing.
The police are stumped.
Halloween is coming, and an ancient evil is on the horizon.
The vampires are the good guys.

This is not your ordinary fall weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. Vampire private detectives Jimmy Black and Greg Knightwood have been hired to save a client from being cursed for all eternity, but end up in a bigger mess than they ever imagined.

Suddenly trapped in the middle of a serial kidnapping case, Jimmy and Greg uncover a plot to bring forth an ancient evil. Soon, they've enlisted the help of a police detective, a priest, a witch, a fallen angel and a strip club proprietor to save the world. This unlikely band of heroes battles zombies, witches, neuroses and sunburn while cracking jokes and looking for the perfect bag of O-negative.

What's not to love about a snarky Buffy loving vampire?   The vampires aren't sexy, in fact they look exactly as they did at the time of change along with the extra or lack of pounds.  They, both Jimmy and his partner Greg, are still the same geeks as before with the same problems with women and a fondness for children and the underdog.  What they did gain was increased speed, a craving for blood, and ability to help out those kids and underdogs.

The dialogue in HARD DAY'S KNIGHT, both internal and external, is what really makes this book.  I learned the hard way to not both read this book and take a drink of tea.  I really tend to prefer snarkiness over sexiness any day of the week though I definitely don't mind both. I mean seriously how many 'I am too sexy for...' does a girl need?

Mr. Harkness has done a fantastic job with the characters of this band of misfits.  And I am really hoping to read further books in this series.  I really recommend this book to anyone who prefers their vampires with a sense of humor.  I rate this book a 3.9.

*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.  All opinions expressed within are my own.
