Review: Ristorante Pizza by Dr. Oetker

I was all prepared to hold a grudge against this pizza when I couldn't find them at my local Safeway.  I checked a couple other stores with no luck.  I even had Lou, a friend, looking for me but we just couldn't find a supply.  Then Lou asked if I had done an internet search for it.  Talk about a deer in the headlights moment.  I use the internet to find everything but I didn't even think to use it to find a pizza.

It turned out that while Safeway wasn't cool enough to carry this delicious pizza Fred Meyers did have a couple of the varieties.  While I was looking up just where to find Dr. Oetker Ristorante Pizza, I also checked out the different varieties available and I was looking forward to trying the Funghi with mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese or perhaps the  Quattro Formaggi with Mozzarella, Edam, Emmental and blue cheeses.  Unfortunately, those varieties weren't available.

I came home proudly with both the Pizza Spanici and the Pizza Pepperoni Pesto and preheated the oven.  The aroma that was wafting through the kitchen as my pizzas cooked was more then enough to curb my disappointment in not finding all the different varieties.  If I closed my eyes, I could picture myself back in a German pizzeria.

I had a slight, no let's change that to a major, mishap when I was taking the Pizza Spanici out of the oven and I dropped it topping side down on the floor.  I can tell you that the dogs absolutely loved it once it had cooled down enough.  Thank goodness that I still had the second pizza or I would have cried.

As it turned out, the one pizza was enough for both myself and my husband when served together with a fresh green salad.  And I can say that my nose didn't lie.  This is the best frozen pizzas I have ever tasted.  Heck, it is one of the best pizzas period.  The crust is thin and developed a nice crispiness without becoming overcooked.  And the sauce was incredible!  Very flavorful and loaded with herbs and spices.

I do have to say that I am hooked.  This is now the only type of pizza that I want to keep in the house even though I have to make the trek to Fred Meyers to get it.  I just wish that they would carry the other varieties so I could try them out also.

**I was given the opportunity to try out Dr. Oetker Ristorante Pizza for free in exchange for an honest opinion.
