Art Bead Scene April Monthly Challenge

Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940
By Frida Kahlo

I just love this picture and had so many ideas and inspirations from it.  I mean it has some of my favorite totems in it with the dragonfly, the black cat and the hummingbird.  As seems to happens though, this month managed to get away from me especially with the closing on our house getting closer and closer.  I did manage to find some time last Wednesday to sneak away to my studio.

I really wanted to feature a dragonfly in my design so I started to dig through my art beads to find one.  As I was digging however I found this gorgeous focal from Beads By Earthtones that had all those glorious greens along with touches of gold.  I dug a bit further but the die was cast.  I still wanted to feature dragonflies however so I found a brass stamping and finally used my hole puncher (the dang thing intimidated me) and away I went.  I also added in some vintage African seed beads, some golden pewter chain and a pewter dragonfly clasp.  Not exactly what I originally had in mind but I am rather happy with this necklace.  Besides, would you be able to resist that focal bead?

  2. After they published the inspiration picture, I read more and more about her and her work...what a fascinating, albeit shortened life she had!

Your necklace is so perfect! Love the focal! Kudos for using your hole punch!
