Spring Already?

I saw the strangest sight when I stepped out on my front porch this morning to drink my tea.  I had two robins in my front yard bickering over something in my front yard. Maybe my old age has affected my memories, but I seem to recall that robins are the first sign of spring.  If that is so,  then why in the world am I seeing them in January?  I know that scientists can't seem to agree on whether global warming is real.  Perhaps they should visit my front porch.

Contest: Keeping the Feast

Marye Audet over at Baking Delights is running a great contest for the book KEEPING THE FEAST.  She also has a great review for this interesting book.  Check it out!

Good luck!

More Kid Pics

Now as most of you already know, I don't have human children.  But I do consider my animals to be kids.  I don't want them to be human but they are my furkids.  Now my DH managed to get a couple good pics of my laptop Bella that I wanted to share.  I call her my laptop because that is where she is all the time.  She even curls up under my laptop computer so that she can be warm and close. :)

Wow!!  Laurell K. Hamilton is back on the top of her game.  Yes there is sex, but how can there not be when Anita is feeding.  Yes there are sexy men but again how can there not be?  Most of Anita's men are just too yummy.

FLIRT starts out innocently for Anita with a lunch with her men.  It quickly turns dark and dangerous.  Pick up FLIRT to see just how far Anita will go to protect those she loves.

One thing I really loved about this book was the epilogue where Ms. Hamilton walks us thru the process of writing FLIRT  right from the original idea to when she hands it over.  I found this very interesting.

I highly recommend FLIRT to any readers who love Anita Blake.  It is dirty, gritty and of so Anita.  I rate it a 5 out 5.

Oh where did the hours go?

I just had four days off and I am sitting here at work wondering just where those days actually went.  I did manage to accomplish quite a bit but it sure seems that by way too fast.  I am not quite sure why time seems to speed up as I get older.  Come to think of it, why is it that when we get older, we no longer get summer vacations.  It seems backwards as I didn't need the summer off to recuperate when I was younger but it sure would be nice now.

Oh and I decided that since I hadn't posted any pics of my furkids lately, I had better change that.  I took that pic of Kitsune on Monday.  He sure is a strange dog.  His favorite thing in the world is to sit on the porch and watch the world go by.

I went out today to tea with a couple of girlfriends.  Just an afternoon of chatting, gossiping and general catching up with each other's lives as we don't see each other all that often anymore.  Studies say that these form of connections are good for both our physical and mental health.  I am curious however just how many of us actually manage to maintain these connections in today's world.  Or rather then taking the time to get together physically, do we instead just send emails or pick up the phone?  I know that I am guilty of taking the easy way out.  Really getting together did cause me to feel more grounded and energized though.

As we were leaving, we promised to do this at least every couple months.  Now let's see if we actually manage it.

How good are you at maintaining your friendships in person?  How important do you feel it is to get together physically?

The Cost of Sight

I went out on Tuesday to get new glasses.  Mine were pretty much shot as the prescription is almost 10 years old.  Yeah I am a procrastinator at times.  What finally drove me to getting new ones was the fact that every time I tried to work on my jewelry I was getting headaches.  A hobby that I enjoy and use to relax was causing pain.  Just not acceptable.

So anyways, I went out and got a new prescription.  Went to Target Optical and was really pleased with how I was treated.  Never felt rushed which was a nice feeling.  What wasn't so nice was learning that I now need to get bifocals.  Yeah I am getting old.  At least with the advances in technology, no one will be able to tell since I went with one of the new ones that isn't lined.

What shocked me was that the cost of the lenses were over $650!  That didn't include the cost of the frames either.  Thank goodness, I have good vision insurance.  I ended up paying only $150 for the full set.  But it does cause me to wonder just what people without insurance would do?  Especially when you consider that a lot of people that don't have insurance also don't have good paying jobs.  So are they expected to just wander around in a fog?  This visit really makes me more determined that universal health care is the way to go.  Especially if it includes vision care.

One Scream Away

Kate Brady is another new to me author which isn't really surprising as this is her first book.  For a debut novel in the romantic suspense genre, ONE SCREAM AWAY is a very solid offering.

Seven years ago, Beth Denison was attacked by a killer named Chevy Bankes.  She has tried to move beyond it in making a good life for her and her daughter.  But now Chevy is out of prison and heading her way.

Ex-FBI agent Neil Sheridian is pulled back into the game by a friend when he notices the similarity between a recent homicide and a case that Neil worked years ago.  The case that cost Neil his career and his family.  Perhaps catching the right man and saving Beth will help put his demons to rest.

Her characters are believable and oh so easy to emphasize with.  Both Neil and Beth have tortured pasts that they have to learn to let go of so that they can reach into the future.  I really admired Beth and the things that she had done for herself and her little girl Abby.  If I have any complaint about the book is that the curves were too easy to spot too far ahead.  But her characterization skills go a long way to making up for that.  So while not the best in this genre, I will certainly be keeping an eye out for Ms. Brady's future offerings.

I rate ONE SCREAM AWAY a 3 out of a possible 5.

I declare Sundays Mindless!!

At least that is until I start my new schedule on the 24th when I will have to start working them.  Working weekends will definitely be a change but what can a girl do when she needs to have a day off during the week for appointments.  I have worked 4 10s for years and love them.  But this time when the shift bids came about to get my 4 10s I would have had to work Monday thru Thursday.  I know that a lot of people would love to have a 3 day weekend every week but I just can't work those hours back to back anymore.  My body just won't deal with it.

So anyways, what's up with the mindless?  I spent most of the day droning playing a video game.  I decided that I needed the downtime as I worked almost 60 hours last week.  Trying to get money together so that we can move when we find a place.

I hope that everyone else had a great Sunday also.  Did you spend it with family?  Work on crafts?  Spend the day doing religious activities?

Where did all energy go??

Just why is it that children have all the energy?  I mean, it doesn't even make sense in terms of survival of the species when you consider that quiet, still children are easier to hide and keep safe.  And isn't it the adults that have to gather the fruits and vegetables and bring home the catfood?  I mean seriously, what is up with this??

Okay rant over.... at least for a moment.  I am just tired as I have been working 12+ hour days since Tuesday.  I sure could use some that energy that all kids have.  I just keep saying to myself that we need the money for a new house.  DH is actually out looking at some now, checking to see if any are worth a second look.   Hopefully we will find our perfect home.  I really want to set up a studio, especially now that I am getting new glasses so that I can see again.

So how is everyone's day?  Any big plans for the weekend?

The rain may never fall till after sundown

In Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Camelot, Camelot
That's how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.

It was misting here last night.  You know, a rain so light with the raindrops so small that it is nothing but mist.  I made the comment to my husband that occurrence would only happen here.  I was immediately corrected that it misted a lot during the summer in San Francisco.  I joking asked if it was like Camelot to get a blank stare.

I love musicals.  And I think that this one in particular started my lifelong love of Authurian Legends and fantasy.  I really think that I need to find a copy and watch it with my husband.

New Look

One of my goals this year is to post more to my blog.  So obviously I will be spending more time here.  So I decided to personalize it more by looking for a template that isn't quite as generic.  So I will be playing around until I find the perfect fit for my new home.  Let me know what you think.

Things that make you go hmmm....

I love my husband.  I really do.  But give us a couple days off together and by the end of it, I am ready to kill him.  It seems that the evening of the second day and we are starting to snipe at each other.  Makes me glad that we work opposite hours.  I miss him when I don't see him all the time but it sure preserves our marriage.  So I happily sent him off to work today and now it is my time.  I think that a real part of it is the fact that I don't get to really relax when we have the time off together.  There is just so much to get caught up on.  Hmmmm... maybe if we did have more time off together this wouldn't happen.  Something to think about.

Here is it the third day of the new year and I am already so ready for summer.  Well since I can't push the seasons along, I decided to cook a summer meal in a winter fashion.  I decided that I really wanted BBQ Chicken Sandwiches and rather then using the BBQ I am cooking them up in the crockpot.  Hopefully the meal will give a bite of summer.

I have a question.  Why is it that with tea being drank by far more people then coffee, that it is impossible to find a good teapot that will both steep your tea and keep the pot warm.  I guess that I shouldn't say impossible.  I did find one for $299 but any coffee drinker can find a decent pot for under a hundred.  Just what is up with that?  I guess that I had better start saving up my pennies.  Sigh...

Well I hope that everyone is having a great sunday!

The Girl on Legare Street

Occasionally nothing will satisfy as much as a mystery.  I have to admit that those occasions don't hit me frequently but they do it.  So I was happy to see that I had THE GIRL ON LEGARE STREET among my books needing to be reviewed.

Ms White has done a great job of blending a mystery with the paranormal.  The main character Melanie has spent her entire life trying to ignore her gifts which allow her to communicate with the dead.  She has also spent most of her life hating her mother who left her when she was only seven years old.  But now her mother is back in her life and trying to protect her from a spirit that is out for revenge.

Once I picked up THE GIRL ON LEGARE STREET I had a hard time putting it back down.  The twists and turns draw the reader in deeper as Melanie and Jack, who is a hunk that Mel can't seem to figure out what do with, race against time to decipher why this spirit is out to destroy Mel and her mother.  The answer is one that comes out of left field.  I would highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys their mystery with a little extra spice of the paranormal.

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a happy and safe New Year's Eve.  Myself and my dh just stayed home.  And I can tell that I am getting old as I was curled up in my chair by 10.  I had hubby wake me up right before midnight.

Today was a good day.  We went out to lunch at Applebees.  I had myself a nice steak for lunch and hubby had some sandwich.  We then we out and saw Avatar.  This movie was awesome!  I highly recommend it to anyone and we didn't even get to see the 3D version because I messed up when I ordered the tickets thru Fandango.  I don't think that I have ever seen a better sci-fi movie! I rate it 10/10 stars!

Resolutions for this year.  Well I don't really tend to make them as I tend to be too scattered. Maybe if I call them goals, I will have a better shot of hitting them.

One that I do plan to aim for is posting more to my blog.  I might post a review, a rant or just an update on my life.  Last year, I started my blog in May and I had 74 posts.  This year, I would like to hit at least 200.

Another one that I really plan to work on is my jewelry & braiding.  I am planning on going in this month to get new glasses so I won't have any excuse not to work on crafts.  Then I need to get some good pics of them up so that I can sell them.  I don't even need to come out ahead but it would be nice to recoup some of the money I have in supplies.  Then I could justify buying more!

Healthwise, I plan on finding myself a new doctor that I can work with.  Yeah, I still don't have one and this is beyond ridiculous considering that I have good insurance and a documented chronic condition.  So I need to get this fixed.

This last one isn't so much a goal as a plan.  We plan on finding another house.  I have no proof but I think that this one might be effecting our health.  Both myself and my hubby starting having body aches and pains soon after we moved in here.  Mine are perhaps explained by my fibro but we haven't found and explanation for his.  Besides this house needs far too much work that we are not physically able to do.  So hopefully we can find a new home in better condition.  It's not like we can't afford  it.

So what goals or plans do you have for this new year and decade?
