Too Old?

I haven't been to a sci-fi convention in years, not since I was in my 20s.  But my DH has been invited to be one of the panelist at Norwescon, that is where I will be all weekend.  It should be a blast if my body will hold up to the wacky hours.  Luckily it's being held only about 30 minutes from here so we can run home to take care of the kids.  I would have preferred to get a hotel room but I don't think that they would like us showing up with 4 dogs in tow.

So wish me luck and I will bring back lots of pics.

Review: The Search

I have to admit that I don't read a lot of Nora Roberts.  I just don't care for straight romance.  However her romantic suspense is delicious.

Several years ago, there was a serial killer named Perry that was out there kidnapping and killing young women.  Fiona was the one that got away and helped to put him away.  Fast forward to now, Fiona 'Fee' has remade her life on Orcas Island.  She is now a dog trainer and is heavily involved with Canine Search and Rescue.  She meets a handsome man, Simon, who doesn't like dogs but brings her a pup to train.  Oh Fee isn't his type either.

Now there is another killer out there mimicking Perry's style right down to little details that were never released.  Friends, family, the FBI and Simon are worried that Fee is one of the targets.

This book is incredible.  As someone that was involved in dog rescue for years, I was really impressed by how right on Ms. Roberts is on dog psychology.  She either has a pack of dogs at home or did a lot of research on the subject.  I even learned a trick and I used to take in problem dogs and retrain them until they could be rehomed.

I could go on and on about the dogs but there are many other great things in the book.  Ms Roberts has always fantastic about designing three dimensional characters and  the interpersonal relationships between her characters are always spot on.  The tension is enough that you can't put the book down regardless of the alarm going off the next morning.  In fact, I recommend reading it on a weekend or it makes for a long next day at work.  And the best recommendation in my eyes is the fact that my husband couldn't put the book aside.

I give this book a 5 and I tend to give out very few of them.  In fact, in 8 years of reviewing I can still count the number of 5s I have given on my fingers and toes with several left over.  Pick this book up.  I promise that you won't be disappointed.

Review: Storm of Shadows

I just finished Ms. Dodd's STORM OF VISIONS, the second book in her in Chosen Ones series.  This is one series that seems to be improving with age or at least with each book.

Aaron Eagle, the art & antiquities thief, is my favorite character.  I just love the looks and the mystery of a brooding Indian.  This book centers around him and the librarian Rosamund who is helping him track down and translate the prophecy concerning the Chosen Ones.   They end up traveling all over the world and there are many twists and turns to keep the reader on the edge of their seats.

I very much enjoyed this book and am really looking forward to reading the next in the series.  I rate this book a 3.5

Contest: Sprint Overdrive

I admit to being an internet junkie, heck my laptop goes everywhere with me.  So I am seriously considering the Sprint Overdrive.  It just seems so handy and I wouldn't  have to worry about the router going down at work,

I have that David Bowie song running through my head.  Oh well, I guess that if I needed to have a song sticking around at least it is a good one.

I received an email from Blogger all about how they updated their templates and our ability to customize them.  I couldn't resist going in and playing.  What you see now is the result.  I think that it fits me better as I love aqua/teal colors and well I am a Cancer.  Very much a water person.

So how do you like it?  Too bright, too hard to read?

Review: Fire

It has been a while since I have read a good old fashioned fantasy.  It seems that lately I have been drawn to the paranormal or the urban fantasies.  However as I was looking through my to-be-read pile I came across FIRE by Kristin Cashore and decided to give it a try.  I have to say that I am very glad that I did.

FIRE is fantasy that is classic in the sense that it is good against evil.  But the battles and the wars are more of the background setting.  FIRE is about two people, Fire and Brigan, and their growing love for each other.  The rest of the characters, and there are some great secondary characters, are there to support Fire and Brigan.

I loved this book and I can't even pinpoint why.  I just know that I had a hard time setting it aside.  I am so far behind on my emails and blogs now.  I rate it a 4.5 out of a 5.

It's Just Wrong

Here it is almost 6 o'clock and I am finally getting a chance to sit down to relax.  And I didn't even work today!  I really need a day where I can just sit and drone but I don't see that happening until after Saje is healed up more.  I still have to get up and cook some dinner.  Then I have help him get cleaned up.  It must really suck not being able to use your dominant arm.  And here I thought that it was bad when I  had surgery on my hand.  I was all healed up enough to use it a week later.

I know that I am bitchy because I am hurting today.  It is a beautiful day and normally that causes my fibro to back off a bit but not today.  There are somethings that that regardless of how I am feeling that really piss me off.  This morning when I went to take my shower after soaking in the hot tub at the gym, in one of the stalls there was no one there but the water was just running.  Don't people realize that water is a finite resource.  Perhaps that person needs to be dropped in the middle of the desert with only a cup of water.  Then perhaps they will realize just how precious it really is.  I just wish that I knew who had done that.  I would have loved to give them a piece of my mind.

I did get to do some shopping today while I was waiting for my prescriptions to be filled.  I found a cute pair of sandals.  I really needed a new pair as I tend to wear them all year round.  I can't stand to have my feet cramped up on closed toe shoes.  These sandals do have a bit of a heel though so only time can tell on how well I will be able to wear them.

Guess that it is time to go make dinner.  I am throwing together chicken fried rice.  Should be good though  I don't think Saje thinks that it enough for a complete meal.  I am not sure why it wouldn't be as pasta is enough for a complete meal.  Men...sometimes I just don't understand them.

Review: Covet

I have to admit that I have been in love with J.R. Ward ever since her first book came out.  She brought a breath of fresh air to the vampire genre that was sorely needed.  So needless to say, I was excited when the first book of her new series made it to my doorstep.

COVET is the first book in her Fallen Angels series.  It is based the concept that God and the Devil are playing a game similar to football with the lives of humans and the big guys are getting bored with the game.  Both sides had to agree on one player (the quarterback) who will be helping others who are the crossroads between good and evil.  Jim, who is the quarterback, is a man that done great evil in the past yet is also capable of great good.  He comes into the life of Vin who has come decisions to make.

I really enjoyed this book.  It starts off with a bang then slows down for a bit while all the players are introduced.  Then the story starts to romp along.  Well worth reading and I give it a 3.5 out of 5.  I would have rated it higher except for that slowdown.

Week In Review March 14th to March 20th

It will never cease to amaze me just how quickly the weather here in the Puget Sound region will change.  Yesterday it was almost 70 degrees.  A totally gorgeous day for March.  Today it is gray and drizzling.  Well at least it makes me happy that I am here at work.

Last week was really a kicked back week with Saje not feeling fit for human consumption.  I read a good book and watched a couple good movies.  For a change, it didn't feel boring but rather it was relaxing.

On the health front, I did go to my acupuncturist on Wednesday but I don't see any changes this week.  Perhaps because I had to skip last week. The thing is, I am not sure how much the acupuncture is really helping.  I did notice that my fibro adhesions moved out of my legs those first couple weeks, but they just relocated into my shoulders which was even more painful.  I mean, I can stay off my legs a lot of the time if I need to.  But I am using my arms and hands all the time.  I don't have a choice with my job or my hobbies.

Speaking of hobbies.  My jewelry is starting to call my name again which is rather exciting.  I was beginning to think that my muse had taken a permanent vacation.  I have this 3 strand bracelet stuck in my head.  I guess that I really need to start carrying a journal again.

Well that is all for now.  I hope that everyone has a great week!

National Poultry Day

It occurred to me that I hadn't done a wacky holiday lately so...Ta Daah.

Today is the National Poultry Day.  This is to honor all the chickens and turkeys that we consume.  I know that around my house, chicken is a staple my household as my hubby finds that beef is harder to digest.  I just love the fact that there are so many different things one can do with a chicken breast.  I wanted to share a great recipe with you :)

White Chicken Chili

  • 2 large jars of Great Northern beans 3 cups chicken broth
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 medium onions
  • 4 cups cubed chicken (approx. 4 chicken breasts)
  • 2 4-oz. cans green chilis *2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp. oregano
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne red pepper
  • Grated cheddar or monteray jack cheese
  • salsa & sour cream if desired
In one tsp. of oil, saute garlic & onion until sauced. Add beans & broth to mixture. Shred chicken (or in a food processor) and add to mixture. Add chilies & all spices. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook on low for 30-40 minutes. Great to make a day ahead! Serve with cheeses and sour cream for topping.

Random Thoughts

I have to go see ALICE IN WONDERLAND!  I have been in lust with Johnny Depp for years.

I never realized just how much my husband does around the house until he is unable to do so.

I can't believe that people actually believe that animals don't have personality.

Must be getting old.  I was so wrapped up in a book at the hot tub that I didn't notice the gorgeous guy that sat next to me until I was leaving.

Spring must be coming-now to get a whole beautiful day on one of my day's off.

Not sure what I am making for dinner.  Something with chicken.

Acupuncture really seems to work.  Now if it would get rid of the pain rather then moving it around my body.

Wonder I can be thinking one word and a totally different word comes out of my fingers.  And it is even spelled correctly.

You just need a break from reality.  I just watched Monster vs Aliens.  What a great way to relax and recharge your batteries.  I do recommend this movie to anyone that hasn't had a chance to watch it yet.  Yeah it is a kid's movie, kinda.  But it is one that adults will enjoy also.

Review: Storm of Visions

I did mention when I posted my earlier book review that I had another that I needed to get up.  Sorry that it has taken me so long.  I didn't realize just how much my husband did around here until he was unable to do so.  So better late then never.

STORM OF VISIONS is the first book in Christina Dodd's new series The Chosen Ones.  It is a story of good and evil centering about a group of people from various backgrounds that have one thing in common.  They were all abandoned as children and given special gifts such as visions and healing to make up for that fact.  Now they have banded together to fight for good.

I really enjoyed this book.  It is a masterful blend romantic suspense and well what might fall into urban fantasy.  I can easily see it appealing to readers of both genres.  Great start to a new series and I rate it a 3.5 out of a possible 5.

Week In 3-8 to 3-14

Sorry that I didn't get to my week in review yesterday.  I try to do them when I am at work on Sundays.  Usually that is a pretty dead day, all except for yesterday.  It was insanely busy because everyone wanted to add HBO for their mini-series.

Now let me think back over the past week.  You know, I am really deciding that I live a boring life.  I really need to start getting out and doing more if for no other reason then so I can write about it on Sundays.

The only thing that really stands out is Saje's surgery.  It rather well even though it felt as though I was sitting in the waiting room forever.  I think that he is getting frustrated because there are many things that he can't do for himself such as tie his shoes or even put toothpaste on his toothbrush.  I do have to give him credit though.  He is dealing with it much better then I would be.  He has a pretty good attitude and all.

As far as my health goes, I haven't had as many problems with my shoulders this week.  I wonder if it all has to do with the fact that I wasn't able to do acupuncture.  Things that make you go hmmm.  I just wish that they would find a cure for fibro.

Well that's all for this week.  Rock on
Mar 12, 2010

Yesterday was one long day.  It started at 4:30 in the morning.  Way too early for me.  I might be slowly getting used to getting up in the morning but not that early!  We had to be there at 5:15 for his surgery that was actually scheduled for 7:30.

The nurses were all really nice.  But what amazed was their hospital gowns.  Yes they still open up in the back.  Too make up for this indignity though, they now have gowns that has a hose attached to hit to pump in hot air.  There have been some times that I would have killed that technology for my house.  Even if I had to wear one of those silly gowns.  The sacrifices I make in seeking heat.

The husband made it thru surgery with flying colors.  He came out of surgery at 10:00 and then was in recovery for a couple hours before I was able to go back and see him.  He looked so pale and out of it.  I took a pic of him in recovery but I don't want to be shot so I don't think that I should put it up.

The rest of the afternoon was interesting.  He would wake up for an hour and then go back to bed for another four.  The husband was thinking that he was only going to be out of work for a couple weeks.  Now it has finally dawned on him that this was a major surgery and it will take some time for him to heal.

Wish me luck in surviving his healing.  So far he has been good but I am sure that all the restrictions will start to wear on him.  When that happens, I am sure that he will become rather bitchy.

Contest: Alice In Wonderland Giveaway

Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland has opened.  Has anyone gotten the chance to see it?  One comment I heard about the movie is that to truly understand it, you must have done drugs preferably ones encouraging hallucinations.  I got a chuckle out of that.

I ran across the most excellent contest following this theme that I just had to share with everyone!

Check out those goodies and then hop over to Faerie Moon Creations to enter!

It's a great blog that I have enjoyed wandering about.

Review: Blood Magic

I certainly go through phases.  There are times when I am just devouring paperbooks and there are others when I am engrossed in my audiobooks and podcasts.  I am back on paper and have this review and another to get up this week.

As Lily and Rule go ahead with their wedding plans, there is tension within the Clan about it.  There is also tension breaking loose in the form of violent crimes and riots in San Diego that have nothing to do with them.  Or does it?  When an old enemy of Lily's bloodline shows up, they have no choice but to deal with her before the whole world pays.

I fell in love with Ms. Wilk's world from her very first book TEMPTING DANGER and I have never looked back.  There haven't been any relationship woes were I am just trying to get through a book in hopes that the next is better.  Every book is better then the last!  I love watching Lily and Rule grow and change.  They were complete within themselves but together they are dynamite.  Ms. Wilks also has an outstanding group of secondary characters that sometimes still the show and then gracefully give it back.  I highly recommend this latest addition to the series and give it rating of 4 out of 5.

Week In Review 3-01-10 to 3-07-10

Hello everyone!

I almost feel as I could skip this review as not a lot happened that was interesting but since I am trying to develop a new habit I thought that I had better.  Did you know that to make a habit your own that you need to do it daily for 8 weeks.  Since I only do this update weekly, goodness knows how long it will take.

My health this week for the most part has been pretty good.  One thing that happened that was interesting to me was the way that my fibro adhesions moved from  lower back up to my shoulder blades.  This has been  causing a lot of pain when I attempt to use my arms which is all the time.  I am kinda curious as whether the acupuncture could be causing this.  If so, then I need to cease the acupuncture if it continues.

On the home front, everything is the same.  We are waiting for DH's surgery so hopefully he will be fixed.  He is in quite a bit of pain so it makes everything interesting.

I hope that everyone has a great week!

Employee Appreciation Day

It is Employee Appreciation Day!  Is your employer doing anything nice for you?

Around here it looks like we were forgotten.  As it is also National Salesmen Day and I am in the sales department for a major corporation.

On the upside, it is an absolutely gorgeous day today!  Beautiful blue skies and a warm breeze.  Make me think of curling up on my porch with a good book and a cup of iced tea.

Not a lot of time today and it's not that it is busy here at work.  Instead I swear that every call I get today has an issue that is complicated.  So I decided to share some pics I have taken lately.
