Insecure Much?

My husband gained weight when he was recovering from surgery.  Quite a lot of weight.  I think that when he stepped onto the scale at the gym he shocked himself.  So now he is determined to lose it.  And like most men, it is coming off easily.  In a way, watching this is amusing as all of a sudden he has discovered calories.  The look on his face when he found out just how many calories is in a candy bar was priceless.  His goal is to get a flat stomache, preferably with a six pack.  He just might succeed as he is hitting the weights pretty regularly and discovering that he really likes it.

So we are trying to eat healthier with more salads and vegetables in our diets.  We haven't been going out to eat as much either. This I know is going to be good for both of us.  So why is there an issue? 

Well the doctor has me on a new drug that is causing me to gain weight.  I have to admit that I have never had to learn to have will power where food is concerned.  While my body has naturally regulated itself about 20 pounds more then I would like, still it was a good healthy weight.  I haven't had to buy larger sized clothes in 15 years.  Now they are getting tight.  And just as the hubby is on this push to loose inches. 

I want to support him in any way and I will.  But I have to ask myself why he is doing this now when I am gaining weight?  Was his weight gain a trigger for him to go thru a midlife crisis and it is time for him to start looking around again?  Only time will tell.


  1. We are in the reverse in my household... Lee has however quit drinking soda and dropped a few pounds. For me it was about getting ME back... and not a mid life anything or looking around - I admit to being to lazy for that!

    My big shocker - that there are SEVENTY FIVE calories in ONE oreo cookie... Ugh!

  2. I understand about drugs that cause you to gain weight. Here's a horror story for you. Once my doctor put me on a medication that caused me to put on 20 pounds in a month and a half. I kid you not. She took me off it pronto, but of course the 20 pounds didn't come off pronto.

    Sucks, doesn't it? But you know what? We rock. We rock out loud.

  3. I guess that I have been lucky. So far I have only gained 5 pounds but he just upped my dosage as the lower dose just wasn't working. And I am so short that the 5 pounds are rather obvious.

  4. I quit smoking just over a year ago... thinking that it would make me feel healthier. It hasn't. Then I got to thinking, maybe if I didn't weigh almost 15% more than I should, I wouldn't feel as though I've moved to a heavier gravity world. I'm not getting any younger and if I don't change my habits, losing this weight and getting healthier is just going to get more and more difficult. And losing weight is only "easy" for guys with the dedication and will to do it. So many don't have it, as we can plainly see looking around at all the 40+ guys who've simply given up and no longer give a shit.

    If I want to feel healthier, maybe the trick is to GET healthier.

  5. Hi...I wanted to leave you a note...a reminder that motivations like your last paragraph denotes can drive us insane. Try not to think of your husband's weight as 'his'. You can use your husband's weight and health awareness as a bolster. You may have an extra burden with your medication causing you to gain weight, but you can still lose weight. I know. I'm in the process right now of shifting to healthier lifestyle choices. It helps that everyone in the house over 7 years old is ready for this. It takes focus, it takes will power, it takes a different mindset. You will get there.

  6. Thank you Kim. I think that I need to stop worrying about a number on a scale and just work on getting healthier. What comes will come regardless of whether I stress about it or not
