Review: Mistress by Midnight

A wicked duke’s bed is no place for a lady...

Merryn Fenner is on a mission to ruin the Duke of Farne. A beautiful bluestocking with a penchant for justice, Merryn has waited ten years to satisfy her revenge against sensual, mysterious Garrick Northesk. Her family name had been tarnished at his hands, her life destroyed. And now she intends to return the favor—by finding the true heir to the duke’s title and disinheriting Garrick.

Yet when a disaster traps Merryn and Garrick together, white-hot desire stirs between the two sworn enemies. Her reputation utterly compromised, Merryn is forced to do the one thing she cannot bear: accept the scandalous marriage proposal of the man she has vowed to ruin.

I don't think that I have ever met two characters that so meant to be together and apparently fate agrees.  Though admittedly fate did have some help from Garrick once he gets to know Merryn.

Usually I find that I emphasize more with the female lead in a book but in this case, I was definitely drawn to Garrick.  He really is a nice guy and so honorable that he would ruin his own life to keep a promise.  Oh and let's not forget sexy.  You just don't find men like that nowadays or if you do, they don't run in my circle.  Merryn is a unique character in herself.  Definitely not what one would expect for a society lady and she definitely deserves kudos for being true to herself, even when she is busy deluding herself.

I have to admit to finding myself impressed with all of the characters actually.  Whether a primary or a secondary character Ms. Cornick has done a wonderful job with them.  They are all memorable with their strengths and weaknesses.  And it is definitely the wonderful job with the characterizations that makes MISTRESS BY MIDNIGHT such an enjoyable historical fiction.  I plan on seeking out the rest of this series and plan a little escape from everyday life by indulging.

I did receive this book from NetGallery in exchange for the review.  No money exchanged hands and all opinions are my own.
