Word for 2014

English: Everything starts from needs or desir...

I have to admit that I almost forgot about choosing a Word to work towards in 2014.  I ended spending time that I really should have been sleeping trying on different words to see how they fit.

The one that fit perfectly for everything that I am planning on this next year is ACHIEVE.  I have several goals that I would like to see come to completion and manifest themselves.

  • I plan on finally get the home loan on our current house.
  • I plan on making and sharing a new piece of jewelry every week for the Year Of Jewelry Project.
  • I plan on posting a minimum of 200 blog posts next year.
  • I hope to finally get the disability approved for Saje as there is no way that he will be able to work since he has to keep his feet elevated for several hours a day.
  • I plan on working on my Artfire shop and actually start selling there.
I am horrible at making goals and this will actually be the first time I have made solid ones. As I am able to check each goal off of my list, there will be a definite sense of achievement.

Did you choose a word for 2014?  Or do you go for the more traditional resolutions?

  • It's a shame that phone no longer come with letters on them.  Remember back in the days when you could give a word standing for a telephone number.  I know that a few companies still do this such as 1-800-COMCAST.  But with cell phones, one has NO idea what the letters stand for.

  • This is Rusty.  He's the new member of our family and very much a Daddy's dog.  I picked him up from the Humane Society and he has been a wonderful fit into our family.
  • I signed back up for the Year of Jewelry Project on Facebook.  Hopefully I will be able to keep up better then I did last year.
  • My job is in total flux.  I have been on a special project since January of 2012.  Well it is ending on Dec 31st and while I know what I will be doing afterwards, I have NO idea how much I will be getting paid.

  •  This is one of the pieces that I designed as gifts.  This one was for Trish who is notoriously hard on jewelry.  I am crossing my fingers that it will hold up.

  • This next one is a purse fob made my Miss Erin from Treasures Found.  She is a wonderful person and has a blog that I do my best to keep up on.  This fob was something that I won in a contest that she ran.  I just got an Iphone and I really need to master taking pictures with it.  Apparently this one was taken using too few pixels to enlarge it.  To see a better picture, click here.
  • We went out and saw Smaug yesterday.  It was a great movie but I didn't know that they ended up splitting that one book into three movies.  I was rather irritated.  I am not sure how they managed to handle making only three movies for the other three books and yet want to divide this one book into three movies.
  • I am really planning on keeping up better with my blog this next year.  I have my word for next year all figured out and I will let you know about that later.

Merry Christmas

I hope that all of my readers have the best Christmas if you celebrate it and just a wonderful day if you don't.  Whatever you choose to do, please be sure to do it safely.  I know that in a many parts of the country, there is a lot of snow and ice on the roads.

Around our house, it is a quiet day where we go out and watch a movie.  In fact, it is the only day that I can say for sure we will see a movie as it is one of our traditions which started early in our marriage.  This year we are going to see THE HOBBIT:  THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG.

The rest of the day is devoted to relaxing and recharging.  I plan on hitting my studio and finally put all the goodies I picked up during the holiday sales put away.  I really should get some pics and put up some bead porn.  Hmmmm... I might just do that if I get ambitious tomorrow.

Old age & multitasking

Tantek Multitasking

If there's one thing that I am really regretting as I am getting old, it is losing the ability to multitask.  I have always been one that is reading one thing on my tablet, answering an email on my laptop and talking to a customer on the phone.  Yet as I am getting older, I am finding that unless I concentrate on one thing at a time I am losing items in the cracks.  Totally not cool.

Having to concentrate on say... my phone calls means that I am not being able to keep up on emails, reading my review books or following blogs.  Heck, I have even been falling behind on my own blog.  I find this to be highly annoying.  I have had to give up on a lot of physical pastimes due to my fibro but I didn't expect to have to cut back on mental excursions.

I have to admit that I am not too sure if this slowing down is occurring because I have reached my fifth decade or my fibromylgia.  Either way I am sick of it.  Has anyone else ran into this issue and if so what did you do about it?

Book Review: Redemption

Reya Sinclair is a Redeemer of Souls. Her mission is to give Earth’s most depraved sinners a shot at redemption just before they are slated to die. Her own redemption is on the line as she fulfills her duties, leaving a trail of dead bodies in her wake. It’s all going perfectly well until one detective takes notice, possibly bringing her salvation to a halt.

Thane Driscoll is a good cop who’s seen too many bad guys get away, including the man who murdered his father. He exacts his own style of justice, even if it costs him his humanity. A string of mysterious deaths leads him to a woman who’s not quite human and might hold the key to finding his father’s killer.

When death and shadows descend, New York City becomes a battleground for the forces of light and dark. As the body count rises and sparks fly between them, Reya and Thane race to uncover a terrible truth. Can one man hell-bent on revenge and one woman determined to save her eternal soul be enough to keep the planet from spiraling into darkness?

Now I will be the first to admit that I have heard of CJ Barry but I hadn't read any of her works.  That is until now and I have no idea what took me so long.  Along with a storyline that kept me entranced, Ms.Barry shows a deft touch with her characters as they grow and become even more arresting as the tale goes on.

REDEMPTION caught my attention within the first couple pages but I couldn't even imagine the questions that this book stirs up about reincarnation and second chances.  This might bother some readers who are opposed to the thought of reincarnation but it ran right along side of some of my beliefs.

Both Reya and Thane start out...well on the dark side of the scale.  There are reasons for this but you will have to read the book to find those out.  They both change and grow as they start to think about their decisions and the consequences of them.  And then you add in a villian that comes from Reya's past.  Well it is a recipe for an engrossing book that doesn't let you up for air.

I do recommend this book to any of my readers who enjoy paranormal romantic suspense with a touch of the metaphysical added in.  I know that I am going to be going on a hunt for Ms. Barry's back list.  I rate it a 4.6.

Book Review: Diamonds and Deceit

A house divided...

London is a whirl of balls and teas, alliances and rivalries. Rose has never felt more out of place. With the Season in full swing, she can't help but still feel a servant dressed up in diamonds and silk. Then Rose meets Alexander Ross, a young Scottish duke. Rose has heard the rumors about Ross's sordid past just like everyone else has. Yet he alone treats her as a friend. Rose knows better than to give her heart to an aristocrat with such a reputation, but it may be too late.

Ada should be happy. She is engaged to a handsome man who shares her political passions and has promised to support her education. So why does she feel hollow inside? Even if she hated Lord Fintan, she would have no choice but to go through with the marriage. Every day a new credit collector knocks on the door of their London flat, demanding payment for her cousin William's expenditures. Her father's heir seems determined to bring her family to ruin, and only a brilliant marriage can save Somerton Court and the Averleys' reputation.

Meanwhile, at Somerton, Sebastian is out of his mind with worry for his former valet Oliver, who refuses to plead innocent to the murder charges against him--for a death caused by Sebastian himself. Sebastian will do whatever he can to help the boy he loves, but his indiscretion is dangerous fodder for a reporter with sharp eyes and dishonorable intentions.

The colorful cast of the At Somerton series returns in this enthralling sequel about class and fortune, trust and betrayal, love and revenge.

I do enjoy a good historical but this book really threw me off as it is filed as a Young Adult and to me if someone is old and mature enough to be engaged or working a full day as an adult then they are not a young adult.  I know that a lot of my readers would not care what genre a book is filed under but I do find that it sets some expectations and I would have enjoyed this book much more if  I wasn't wondering just what the publisher was thinking.

Now that my rant is over, I do have to say that I did enjoy  DIAMONDS AND DECEIT and stepping into that world was a great way to while away a few hours.  All of the characters were really solid and I found that I had a lot of empathy for Rose who is struggling to find her feet in a new social structure.  I also enjoyed the glimpses of the lives of the servants and Rose's old friends.

I am sure that a lot of my readers who like to delve into historical romances will enjoy this book, I didn't find that it had that special something that would raise it above the pack which is why I am rating it a 3.  Opinions I am sure will vary and be sure to let me know what you thought of the book if you have read it.

Boo's Misadventures.

We have been having weather here that is flat out freezing.  I don't think that it has been above 32 degrees for the past week.  This just isn't our kind of weather at all so I am very glad for a warm house with a good heating system.

My ritual on weekends is to get up to let the dogs out and turn on the heat.  Once everyone is back inside, we cuddle until the house warms up.  Yesterday morning however one of the dogs didn't come back.  And of course, it was Boo who being a MinPin doesn't have a coat for this kind of weather.

When she didn't come to the door when I called, I slipped on my sandals and went out to investigate.  A lot of things can distract her.  I don't call her a PinHead for nothing.  That is when I discovered that one of the fence slats between us and our new neighbor had come down.  Now they have a fenced yard also but one of the slats on the back also was down.  The hunt was on.

Now just imagine me out with sandals, yoga pants and a sweater wandering through the neighborhood yelling 'Boo'.  I was fairly frantic because it didn't take long for me to have to go home and grab a coat and shoes.  And poor Boo didn't have anything.  I had images of an icicle of a dog being found.

After about 40 minutes I was able to find her trapped in another yard.  Not too sure just how she managed to get in there as the lady wasn't aware she was there.  My poor baby was just shivering to beat all so I tucked her under my coat and took her home.

So much for my gradual and warm Sunday morning wake up.  The rest of the day went great but what a way to wake up.
